By Starship Alloys | Your Trusted Source for Forged & Rolled Special Steels
If you are sourcing martensitic stainless steel for pump shafts, valve components, turbine parts, or general engineering applications, SS410 is likely one of the first grades you will consider. It is the most widely used martensitic stainless steel in the world — and for good reason.
At Starship Alloys, we supply forged SS410 round bars and flat bars with complete control over melting, forging, heat treatment, and quality testing. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through everything you need to know about this versatile steel grade before placing your next order.
What is SS410 Stainless Steel?
SS410, also known by its equivalent designations X12Cr13 (DIN/EN), 1.4006 (Werkstoff Number), UNS S41000, and SUS410 (JIS), is a general-purpose martensitic stainless steel containing approximately 11.5% to 13.5% chromium. This chromium content is just enough to give it meaningful corrosion resistance while allowing it to be hardened through heat treatment — something austenitic grades like SS304 and SS316 cannot do.
Unlike austenitic stainless steels, SS410 is magnetic in both annealed and hardened conditions. It can be heat-treated to achieve a wide range of mechanical properties, making it one of the most versatile grades in the 400 series.

SS410 Chemical Composition
Understanding the chemistry of SS410 is essential for matching it to your application requirements. The typical chemical composition as per ASTM A276 / ASTM A479 is:
Carbon (C): 0.08 – 0.15%
Chromium (Cr): 11.50 – 13.50%
Manganese (Mn): 1.00% max
Silicon (Si): 1.00% max
Phosphorus (P): 0.040% max
Sulphur (S): 0.030% max
Nickel (Ni): 0.75% max
Iron (Fe): Balance
The relatively low carbon content (compared to SS420) gives SS410 better weldability and toughness, while the chromium content provides a protective oxide layer that resists atmospheric corrosion, mild acids, and freshwater environments.
SS410 Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of SS410 vary significantly depending on the heat treatment condition. Here is a comparison across common conditions:
Annealed Condition:
Tensile Strength: ~480 MPa (70,000 psi)
Yield Strength: ~275 MPa (40,000 psi)
Elongation: ~20-25%
Hardness: ~155-200 HB (75-85 HRB)
Hardened & Tempered Condition:
Tensile Strength: ~760-1400 MPa (110,000-205,000 psi)
Yield Strength: ~585-1100 MPa (85,000-160,000 psi)
Elongation: ~8-15%
Hardness: Up to ~40 HRC
This wide range of achievable properties is one of the biggest advantages of SS410. A single grade can be tailored to meet very different performance requirements simply by changing the heat treatment cycle.
SS410 Equivalent Grades — International Cross Reference
Buyers across different industries and countries refer to the same material by different names. Here is a quick cross-reference table to help you match specifications:
AISI / SAE: 410
UNS: S41000
DIN / EN: X12Cr13
Werkstoff Nr.: 1.4006
BS (British): 410S21 / En 56A
JIS (Japanese): SUS410
Swedish SS: 2302
GOST (Russian): 12X13
Chinese GB: 1Cr13
If your client's drawing mentions any of these designations, they are all referring to the same base material. Specific property requirements may differ based on the standard referenced, so always confirm the Technical Delivery Conditions (TDC) before production.
Heat Treatment of SS410
Heat treatment is where SS410 truly stands apart from austenitic grades. The ability to harden this material through quenching and tempering gives engineers a powerful tool to optimize performance for specific applications.
Full Annealing: Heat slowly to 830–885°C and hold until uniformly heated. Furnace cool to 595°C at a controlled rate of 15–25°C per hour, then air cool to room temperature. This produces maximum softness (75-85 HRB) and is the preferred condition for machining.
Subcritical (Process) Annealing: Heat to 650–760°C and air cool. This is a faster, less expensive annealing process that provides acceptable softness for many applications.
Hardening (Quenching): Austenitize at 925–1010°C, hold for adequate time (typically 15-40 minutes depending on section size), then air cool or oil quench. SS410 has excellent hardenability and can be hardened in still air even in large sections. Achievable hardness after quenching can reach 38-42 HRC.
Tempering: After hardening, tempering is essential. The tempering temperature is selected based on the desired balance of hardness, strength, and toughness:
Tempering at 200-400°C: High hardness retained (35-40 HRC), good wear resistance
Tempering at 600-750°C: Lower hardness (20-30 HRC), significantly improved toughness and ductility
Important Note: Avoid tempering in the range of 425-600°C. This temperature range can cause temper embrittlement in martensitic stainless steels, resulting in a significant loss of impact toughness. This is a common mistake that leads to premature failure in service.
At Starship Alloys, we execute heat treatment at authorized facilities with strict process controls and verify all results through testing at NABL-approved laboratories.
Forging SS410 — Process and Best Practices

SS410 can be successfully forged using both press forging and hammer forging methods. However, proper temperature control during the forging process is critical to achieving a sound microstructure.
Forging Temperature Range: 900–1200°C (1650–2200°F)
The material should be heated slowly and uniformly to the forging temperature to avoid thermal shock. Forging should not continue below 900°C, as working at lower temperatures can introduce residual stresses and cracking.
Post-Forging Treatment: After forging, SS410 must be slowly cooled or immediately placed in a furnace for annealing. Rapid cooling from forging temperature can result in a hard, brittle martensitic structure with internal stresses that may lead to cracking.
At Starship Alloys, our forging process for SS410 follows this sequence:
Melting: Ingots melted in Electric Induction Furnace (EIF) with full killing of impurities. Ladle Refining Furnace (LRF) and Vacuum Degassing (VD) processes are available on request for higher cleanliness requirements.
Forging: Press or hammer forged with a reduction ratio of 3.5 to 4.5 times, ensuring thorough deformation and grain refinement.
Heat Treatment: Full annealing cycle post-forging, or any special quench and temper process as per the client's TDC.
Quality Testing: Ultrasonic testing, hardness testing, mechanical testing, and microstructure examination at NABL-approved laboratories.
Proof Machining: Final machining of forged rounds and flats to client specifications.
SS410 vs SS420: Which One Should You Choose?

This is one of the most common questions we receive from clients. Both are martensitic stainless steels, but they serve different purposes:
Carbon Content: SS410 contains 0.08-0.15% carbon, while SS420 contains 0.15-0.40% carbon. This higher carbon in SS420 means it can achieve significantly higher hardness after heat treatment (up to 50+ HRC vs ~40 HRC for SS410).
Toughness: SS410 offers better toughness and impact resistance at any given hardness level. If your application involves shock loading or impact, SS410 is the safer choice.
Weldability: SS410 is considerably easier to weld than SS420 due to its lower carbon content. SS420 requires much more careful preheating, interpass temperature control, and post-weld heat treatment.
Corrosion Resistance: Both grades offer similar corrosion resistance in the annealed condition, but SS410 generally performs slightly better because lower carbon means less chromium is tied up in carbides.
When to choose SS410: Pump shafts, valve stems, general engineering components, fasteners, turbine parts — applications requiring a balance of strength, toughness, and moderate corrosion resistance.
When to choose SS420: Plastic moulds, surgical instruments, cutlery, bearings — applications where maximum hardness and wear resistance are the priority.
Common Applications of SS410 in Indian Industry

SS410 finds extensive use across multiple sectors of Indian manufacturing:
Pumps and Valves: Shafts, spindles, impellers, and valve seats for water treatment, petrochemical, and power generation industries. The combination of corrosion resistance and ability to be hardened makes SS410 ideal for rotating components in mildly corrosive fluid environments.
Power Generation: Steam and gas turbine blades and components that operate at moderate temperatures. SS410's ability to maintain mechanical properties at elevated temperatures (up to 400°C in continuous service) makes it suitable for these demanding applications.
Oil and Gas: Downhole components, flow control equipment, and fittings exposed to mildly corrosive hydrocarbons and produced water.
Automotive: Exhaust system components, fasteners, and structural parts that require a balance of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.
General Engineering: Shafts, bushings, gears, pins, bolts, and studs where moderate corrosion resistance combined with good strength is required.
Food Processing: Equipment components that contact food products in mildly acidic environments, where the material's resistance to food acids provides adequate service life.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS410
Is SS410 magnetic? Yes. SS410 is magnetic in all conditions — annealed, hardened, or tempered. This is because it has a body-centred cubic (martensitic/ferritic) crystal structure, unlike austenitic grades (SS304, SS316), which are generally non-magnetic.
Can SS410 be welded? Yes, but with precautions. Preheating to approximately 200-260°C is recommended before welding. After welding, the component should be slow cooled and then given a stress relief or full annealing treatment. Matching filler metals (AWS E/ER410) or austenitic fillers (E309) can be used depending on the application.
What is the maximum service temperature for SS410? SS410 maintains useful mechanical properties up to approximately 400°C in continuous service. It has good scaling resistance up to 650°C. Above these temperatures, the mechanical properties degrade significantly.
Is SS410 food grade? SS410 has satisfactory resistance to food acids and is used in food processing equipment. However, for applications requiring the highest corrosion resistance in aggressive food environments, austenitic grades like SS304L or SS316L may be more appropriate.
What is the density of SS410? The density of SS410 is approximately 7.74 g/cm³ (0.280 lb/in³).
What ASTM standards cover SS410? Common ASTM standards for SS410 include ASTM A276 (bars and shapes), ASTM A479 (bars and shapes for pressure vessels), ASTM A182 (forged fittings and flanges), and ASTM A240 (plate, sheet, and strip).
